23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was killed at the metro station in North Carolina last week. According to police, the woman received several knife wounds around 10 PM at the East/West Boulevard station in the South End area of Charlotte.

Iryna had recently arrived in the USA, fleeing the war, hoping for a new life. She was at the scene of the incident, and the suspect, 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown, was arrested and hospitalized with unknown injuries. After treatment, he is expected to be charged with first-degree murder.

Brown has a lengthy criminal history, including 14 cases in court. He previously served time for robbery with a dangerous weapon and other offenses. During the last arrest in January 2025, he was attempting to abuse the 911 service.

Fundraising for the support of Iryna Zarutska's family is ongoing, and at the moment, nearly $15,000 has already been raised.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not yet revealed details about the motives behind the murder.
