The San Francisco 49ers have signed a one-year contract with wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling following his release from Seattle, announced general manager John Lynch. The team has only two healthy receivers left on the roster, which include veteran Ricky Pearsall and rookie Sky Moore.
Valdes-Scantling, who is 30 years old, already has experience playing the receiver position, having spent last season with the Buffalo and New Orleans teams, where he recorded 19 receptions for 411 yards and 4 touchdowns. His average yards per reception was 17.4, which is one of the best metrics among receivers with 200 or more receptions since 1990.
The transition to the 49ers could also be beneficial, as Valdes-Scantling previously played in a similar system with Green-Bay, where he became a reliable deep threat for quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. He also had several significant performances in the playoffs, including a touchdown in Super Bowl 58.
At the moment, the team is facing injury issues: Brandon Aiyuk is expected to miss the first four weeks due to knee surgery, and JuJu Jennings is expected to miss most of training camp due to an injury suffered last summer. The team plans to start the season against Seattle on September 7.
49ers may also explore the possibility of signing former receiver Kendrick Bourne, who was recently released by New England Patriots.
