FDA Approves New COVID-19 Vaccines with Restrictions for Many
- Vaccines against COVID-19 are approved only for high-risk individuals.
- Children under 5 years old can no longer receive the Pfizer vaccine.
- Access to the vaccines may be restricted for many through new limitations.
September 27, 2025, Washington (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved new vaccines against COVID-19, but with restrictions for many Americans. New vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are available for all adults, but their use for younger adolescents and children is limited to those with underlying conditions that increase risk, such as asthma or obesity.
Children under 5 years old can no longer receive the Pfizer vaccine, as the FDA has stated it is an emergency approval for this age group. Parents may opt to apply for the Moderna vaccine, which has full approval for children starting from 6 months, but it may only be available in the presence of serious underlying conditions.
The new vaccines target the new variant of the coronavirus LP.8.1, which has recently become dominant. While vaccines have begun to arrive, many Americans may find it difficult to access the vaccines only through a few weeks' notice, depending on federal health guidelines and insurance company policies.
These changes are a departure from previous policy, which recommended universal vaccination for all Americans aged 6 months and older. Many medical groups, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, have expressed concerns about the new restrictions, stating that they could limit access to vaccines for families.
In addition, the new restrictions may limit access to vaccines for healthy adolescents and children who wish to receive the vaccines for additional protection. If the new vaccines are not covered by insurance, patients may be forced to pay up to $150 out of their own pocket.
