The great city of El-Fasher in Sudan is suffering from a humanitarian crisis
- El-Fasher is experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe due to conflict.
- 260,000 residents, including 130,000 children, are left without assistance.
- The war in Sudan has triggered the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.
El-Fasher, the administrative center of North Darfur, is described as the epicenter of the humanitarian crisis. According to reports from the UN, the area, which is under siege by paramilitary groups, has nearly 260,000 residents, of which half are children. For more than 16 months, humanitarian aid has not reached the city.
In a statement, UNISEF noted that approximately 600,000 people have been displaced from El-Fasher and surrounding camps. However, in the city itself, 260,000 civilians remain, including 130,000 children, who live in "horrific conditions." Nearly 6,000 children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, which puts their lives at risk of death.
Reportedly, aid supplies have been blocked, which has led to catastrophic consequences. "We are witnessing a horrific tragedy - children in El-Fasher are starving, while our vital food services are being blocked," stated Ketrin Russell, executive director of UNISEF.
The agency called on the Sudanese government and all interested parties to ensure unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, and also demands a temporary humanitarian pause in El-Fasher and other conflict areas for the delivery of food, medicine, and water.
The war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has led to the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with over 14 million people displaced and also to famine and outbreaks of disease. The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of lives and is accompanied by horrific crimes against humanity, which are being investigated by the International Criminal Court.
