- The case of McMahon is linked to a Chinese operation called "Operation Fox Hunt."
President Donald Trump pardoned former New York City police sergeant Michael McMahon on November 7, 2025, who was convicted for his role in the campaign to aid the former Chinese official living in the U.S. McMahon received 18 months in prison for conspiracy charges, aiding in the persecution and illegal activities of a Chinese agent.
McMahon stated that he was led into deception when he accepted a job as a private detective, believing that he was working for a legitimate company, not the Chinese government. His attorney argued that the pardon rectifies "an egregious injustice."
During the court hearings, it was revealed that McMahon and his associates threatened, persecuted, and harassed Chinese official Yu Ziyin, to force him to return to China. Yu claimed that his family suffered harassment from the Chinese government.
Official sources in the House of Representatives indicated that there were "problems" in McMahon's case and that he had a distinguished career in the police, receiving 75 commendations during his service.
McMahon's conviction became part of U.S. efforts against Chinese initiatives under the name "Operation Fox Hunt," aimed at the persecution of individuals deemed to be fugitives by the Chinese government.
