Consideration of the use of large warehouses for the detention of immigrants
- Consideration is being given to the purchase of warehouses to expand the detention of immigrants.
- Warehouses could significantly enhance the capacity of ICE twofold.
- Funding is being carried out from the federal budget.
Main Information
The Trump administration is exploring the possibility of purchasing large warehouses, specifically designated for the company Amazon, with the aim of converting them into immigrant detention centers. These warehouses will significantly increase the capacity for detaining individuals apprehended by immigration services.
The warehouses being considered for purchase are located in the southern states of the USA, near airports, from where immigrants are most frequently deported. According to representatives of the Department of Homeland Security, such centers could enhance the efficiency of deportation processes.
Key Facts
Among the options being considered are warehouses that were previously designated for Amazon but were not utilized. These new centers could potentially double the capacity of current ICE facilities, which at this moment cannot accommodate the necessary number of immigrants.
The value of the warehouses and their exact locations are currently unspecified. Funding will be sourced from the budget approved earlier this year, and the warehouses will be owned by the federal government, not private entities.
At this moment, approximately 66,000 individuals are detained by ICE, and this number could rise to 107,000 by January 2026.
