Cancellation of Some Events for Veterans Day Due to Government Shutdown

  • Many events for Veterans Day have been canceled due to the government shutdown.
  • Seven military families report financial uncertainty regarding their salaries.
  • Some communities are still trying to honor veterans through alternative means.

On Veterans Day, volunteers usually gather at the national cemetery Riverside in California to raise flags on more than 300,000 graves. However, this year it will not take place.

The longest government shutdown in the USA has led to the cancellation of parades, ceremonies, and other events that are usually held in honor of veterans. This situation has also caused a backlog among military families, who are experiencing financial uncertainty regarding their salaries.

Organizers of the event "Flags for Every Hero" in California reported that they cannot continue preparations as they do not have access to tools and control for thousands of participants. Other events have also been canceled due to the absence of federal employees and access to military facilities.

Many communities are still planning to hold events for Veterans Day, including major events such as memorial services at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia and a veterans parade in New York.

The fund for the national cemetery in Texas announced the cancellation of an event in Dallas-Fort Worth, stating that the organizers could not prepare the ceremony, even though the government shutdown is expected to end soon.

In Virginia, city leaders in Hampton expressed concern over the absence of military personnel for their annual parade, which has caused a backlog for this year's veterans' recognition.

Organizers of the veterans parade in Detroit announced that the event will take place, but without military orchestras and aerial shows. Other plans include additional volunteers to compensate for the lack of federal resources.

In Mississippi, the veterans association has confirmed the cancellation of its annual parade but decided to hold a dinner for veterans and military personnel on the evening of the day.

Congressman Tony Gonzales announced that the ceremony for Veterans Day at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio will not take place, his office stated on its own event organization.

Gonzales, a veteran of the U.S. Army, said that this was supposed to involve cooperation with local organizations to ensure the execution of the national hymn and the distribution of chairs for participants.
