On Friday, November 7, 2025, the majority of the judges of Brazil's Supreme Court dismissed the appeal of former President Jair Bolsonaro, confirming his sentence of 27 years and three months of imprisonment. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is leading the case, called the arguments for the appeal "impossible" and noted that the ruling contains no omissions.

The voting of Judge Carmem Lúcia is still awaited, but likely, she will join the other panel members. The final decision will be published by November 14, and although it is unlikely that the judges will change their votes, that possibility is not excluded.

Bolsonaro was found guilty in a case of an attempted state coup following the defeat in the 2022 elections and was sentenced for participation in an organized criminal group. His defense team filed the appeal on July 28, demanding a reduction of the sentence, asserting that the accusations in the case of the coup and the state of emergency were politically motivated.

Bolsonaro denies his guilt. He has been under house arrest since September 2025, and the execution of the sentence will only begin after the appeals process is completed.

This case has drawn the attention of the international community. U.S. President Donald Trump initiated a 50% tariff on Brazilian imported goods, which caused a deterioration in relations between the U.S. and Brazil, which experts have called the lowest point in over 200 years of history.

Relations improved when Lula and Trump spoke on the phone, and then they met at the ASEAN summit in Malaysia last month.
