NFL Ex-player Antonio Brown Refuses Extradition

  • Antonio Brown is returning to Miami to face charges of attempted murder in a shooting incident.
  • He is accused of shooting at a man during a dispute following a boxing match.
  • Brown has a long history of legal issues and scandals.

Former NFL star Antonio Brown is returning to Miami from New Jersey, having decided not to contest his extradition to Florida on charges of attempted murder in a shooting incident, authorities reported on Friday.

Brown, 37, was taken into custody in New Jersey after being arrested by U.S. Marshals in Dubuque. He refused extradition during a brief court hearing on Friday.

“Brown is back in custody in Essex where he awaits transport to Florida,” reported Carmen Martin, a representative of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Along with the arrest warrant, Brown is accused of shooting at a man, claiming he shot at a service employee after a boxing event on May 16 and injuring a person with whom he had previously had an altercation. The victim, Zul-Karnain Kwame Nantambu, told investigators that one of the bullets grazed his head.

“Video from social media shows how Brown, with a pistol in hand, approaches Nantambu on the street. The video captured two posts, when Brown lingered for a few feet from Nantambu,” it is stated in the arrest protocol. “The video also shows how Nantambu appeared after the first shot.”

Brown was not immediately arrested that night, as the police did not recognize Nantambu as the victim. Only on May 21, Nantambu filed a complete report about the incident and indicated Brown as the shooter, as stated in the document.

According to his posts on social media, Brown has lived in Dubai for several months. It is unclear why investigators took so long for his arrest or why he was brought to New Jersey instead of Miami. It is also unclear whether Brown has a lawyer.

After the incident, in a post on social media, Brown stated that he was defending himself, as there were "a number of individuals who attempted to invade my personal space and cause me physical harm."

The charge of attempted murder in Florida carries a maximum term of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.

Brown, who played 12 years in the NFL, was one of the best receivers, most recently playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but most of his career was spent in Pittsburgh. For his career, Brown recorded 928 receptions for over 12,000 yards and 88 touchdowns. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler.

He was a key player on the Buccaneers team that defeated Kansas City in Super Bowl 2021, catching a touchdown pass from Tom Brady.

Brown has had several legal issues over the years. Previously, he was accused of assaulting a delivery driver, several incidents of domestic violence, unpaid debts for alimony, and other incidents. During a game in 2021 between Tampa Bay and New York Jets, Brown removed his jersey, shoulder pads, and gloves and left the field, which led to his dismissal from the Buccaneers and effectively ended his football career.
