Reductions in drug prices for weight loss from Trump with new conditions
- Trump announced reductions in drug prices for weight loss
- The new policy may limit the ability to obtain visas for foreigners
- Reductions in drugs will be available through Medicare and Medicaid
President Donald Trump announced reductions in prices for popular weight loss medications, such as Wegovy and Zepbound, which may allow more Americans to access the medications. Drugs will be available at reduced prices through the new website TrumpRx, as well as through Medicare and Medicaid programs.
Prices for Wegovy will drop from $1,350 to $350 per month, while Zepbound will cost around $300 for initial doses. However, despite the price reductions, health care experts warn that out-of-pocket expenses may remain high for many patients, especially for those without insurance.
Trump also introduced new rules that may limit the ability to obtain visas for foreigners with obesity or diabetes. Accordingly, under the new guidelines, visa officers are required to deny visas to individuals who may need government assistance due to their health status.
Significant reductions in drugs may be inaccessible for those who do not have additional insurance coverage, as Medicare does not cover weight loss drugs independently. Thus, only a limited number of patients may benefit from the new prices.
Although the reduced prices will take effect no earlier than January 2026 for Medicare patients, new medications that have not yet received FDA approval will also be included in this agreement.
