The U.S. Government Reduces Air Traffic Control Staffing

  • More than 5,000 flights in the U.S. were canceled due to new rules.
  • The U.S. Senate did not manage to pass a bill regarding the payment of work.
  • The situation with government air traffic control remains strained.

On Friday, November 7, more than 5,000 flights in the U.S. were canceled or delayed due to new government directives, which forced airlines to reduce air traffic control staffing during government operations. These rules began to take effect at the 40 largest airports in the country to reduce the burden on air traffic controllers who work without pay.

Air traffic controllers reported issues due to the fact that many of them have been working without pay for over a month. In an effort to manage the personnel shortage, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an extraordinary order requiring a 4% reduction in flights, which could increase to 10% by the end of next week.

Transportation Secretary Shawn Daft stated that the new rules have not yet applied to international travel. However, the situation at airports may worsen if flight cancellations reach 20% due to prolonged operations.

At the same time, the U.S. Senate did not manage to pass a bill that would provide for the payment of work for federal employees who are forced to work without pay during operations. Democrats blocked a proposal from Republicans that required significant steps.

After the voting, in which 53 senators voted in favor and 43 against, it became clear that the political situation in the country remains strained. Many Americans are facing difficulties due to delays in air travel and uncertainty regarding assistance programs.

At this moment, it is unknown when the 38-day government operation will end, although discussions between Republicans and Democrats have begun.
