Murder of a maid in India after a failed escape

On Wednesday, November 7, 2025, 32-year-old Maria Florinda Rios Perez was killed when she attempted to escape from an illegal house in Uitsutan, near Indianapolis. She worked as a maid and together with her husband Mavricio Velasquez was trying to fulfill an order, but she remembered the address.

According to police information, the woman was shot through the door while standing at the entrance. Her husband did not notice that she was shot, until she fell into his arms, already wounded.

Seven Rios Perez has already raised over $100,000 on the platform GoFundMe to help with the burial in Guatemala. The woman's husband expressed deep sorrow, stating that he needs justice for her death.

The police did not name the shooter, and the case has been referred to the Boone County prosecutor. Prosecutor Kent Eastwood noted that the decision on possible charges will be complex due to the laws of the state of Indiana, which allow the use of deadly force in self-defense.

According to these laws, a person may use deadly force if they believe that their life is in danger. Meanwhile, the prosecutor will thoroughly investigate all circumstances of the case to understand what happened before the shooting.

Rios Perez was a mother of four children, and her family expresses deep grief over this tragedy. The woman's husband has claimed that she did not become a victim of abuse, trying to escape to a house with keys designated for another address.
