Mia Haman, a forward on the women's soccer team at Washington University of Mine, passed away at the age of 21 after fighting stage four cancer. Her death occurred on Thursday, as reported by the university.
In 2024, Haman was one of the top forwards in Big Ten, recording the third lowest goals per game average in the program's history (0.66). She missed her senior season due to a cancer diagnosis.
The head coach of the women's soccer team, Nicole Van Dyke, expressed that Mia was the heart of the program and inspired everyone with her resilience and strength. Her legacy left a mark on all whom she encountered.
In April, Haman was diagnosed with stage four cancer, after which she stepped away from the team to undergo chemotherapy. Support came not only from her teammates but also from other athletes at the university. Notably, wide receiver Denzel Boston expressed his support after a game in which the team secured a victory.
Two days before her passing, Haman participated in a game, where she started the signal for the team at the Haskins Stadium.
Big Ten honored Haman with an athletic award for sportsmanship in 2025 at the beginning of this week. The university's athletic director, Pat Chun, mentioned that the university is mourning the loss of Mia, whose kindness and strength touched every teammate.
Haman is survived by her parents.
