The U.S. Supreme Court Temporarily Halts Implementation of SNAP Payment Order

  • The court has paused the order for full funding of SNAP.
  • The Trump administration requested partial funding due to the crisis.
  • The SNAP program supports 42 million Americans.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday temporarily halted the implementation of an order from a lower court that required the Trump administration to fully fund payments under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in November.

The court granted the Trump administration a stay until Friday to carry out payments through the SNAP program. However, the administration reverted to the appellate court with a request to suspend any court orders that would require it to spend more money than is in the reserve fund, and to allow partial SNAP payments this month.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson noted that she issued a stay, allowing the appellate court additional time to consider the administration's request for partial funding of SNAP payments in November.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the largest anti-hunger program in the country and helps approximately 42 million low-income Americans. Expenditures for the program range from $8.5 to $9 billion per month, and the Trump administration stated that it only has enough funds for partial payments due to a government work stoppage.
