LOS ANGELES — Number 20, the USC team, executed an impressive fake punch against Northvester on Friday evening, releasing to the field third-string quarterback Sam Huard in the same jersey number as the punter of the team.
Wearing the jersey number 80, Huard took the field with the team to execute a fake punt in the second quarter and completed a 10-yard pass to Tanuka Hines. This first down continued the Trojans' second attack, which ended with a touchdown from Jayden Maya.
This trick turned out to be completely legal. Earlier this season, Huard wore number 7, but in the week before, his number was changed to 80 on the USC roster, which the Lincoln Riley team announced.
The punter of the USC team, Sam Johnson, also wears number 80. In college, it is often the case that two players share the same number.
Huard, who is a few inches shorter than 6-foot-3 Johnson, was delighted to start his game with his teammates when he took the field. He is a former five-star recruit who began his career at the University of Washington.
A similar trick was executed by Bowling Green in the previous season at the 68 Ventures Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
The third-string quarterback of the Falcons, Baron May, changed his number from 8 to 18 — very similar to the number of punter John Henderson, who wears 19. In the first quarter, May replaced Henderson and threw a 43-yard touchdown to Malcom Johnson-younger, although Arkansas State defeated them with a score of 38-31.
