On November 8, 2025, Indonesian human rights activists reported the identification of a 17-year-old minor in the explosions that occurred during Friday prayers at the SMA 72 state school mosque in Jakarta. As a result of the incident, 54 individuals were injured.
Witnesses reported that during the afternoon prayer, when the service began, there were two explosions shortly after, causing many people to flee in panic, as the mosque was filled. Police found an automatic firearm belonging to the minor, with inscriptions that reminded of white nationalism.
The national police chief, Listyo Sigit, reported that the minor, who was also injured in the explosions, is receiving treatment and his condition is improving. Human rights activists are conducting an investigation to clarify the motives behind his actions, including checking the possibility that he had been bullied.
The explosions caused serious injuries to many victims, who suffered injuries and burns from the blasts. According to the police spokesperson, most of the injured were near the mosque, thus suffering serious shrapnel injuries. The police have not ruled out the possibility of terrorism, while the investigation continues.
Historically, Indonesia has been a country where there have been terrorist attacks, but since 2023, there have been no recorded serious incidents. This incident has raised concerns among the public and highlighted the need for enhanced security measures.
