Rutte emphasizes NATO's strong deterrent against Putin's threats

  • The NATO Secretary General emphasized the importance of nuclear deterrence.
  • Putin continues to threaten with nuclear consequences.
  • The USA is restoring nuclear deterrent capabilities.

This is reported by RBC Ukraine, Asharq Al-Awsat.

The NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned President of Russia Vladimir Putin that a nuclear war cannot be won. According to him, the successful annual nuclear exercises of the alliance, which took place at the beginning of the month, provided him with "absolute confidence in the reliability of NATO's nuclear deterrent" in response to Russian threats.

Rutte noted that when Russia uses irresponsible nuclear rhetoric, the countries of NATO must understand that escalation is not necessary, as the alliance has strong nuclear deterrent capabilities.

He emphasized that Putin should be aware that a nuclear war cannot be won and should not be initiated.

It is worth noting that Putin repeatedly warned the West about possible nuclear consequences since the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine in 2022. Last month he stated that Russia could use nuclear weapons if it was attacked with conventional missiles, and that Moscow would respond to any attack with nuclear capabilities as a joint attack.

Nuclear threats from Putin

Recently, US President Donald Trump announced that his country would restore nuclear deterrent capabilities, asserting that other countries are already doing this. This statement by Trump came after Putin boasted about new armaments, capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Initially, Putin announced the successful testing of the "Burevestnik" missile, and later of the underwater drone "Poseidon", which, according to reports, are equipped with nuclear propulsion systems.

In the context of these events, the Minister of Defense of Russia, Andrey Belousov, stated that during US military exercises they did not practice nuclear strikes against Russia. He also urged Putin to start preparations for full-scale nuclear exercises.

In response, Putin instructed his subordinates to study this idea, adding that if the USA or other nuclear states restore nuclear testing, Russia "will adequately respond".

According to the press secretary of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov began to justify, stating that Putin did not give an order for preparations for nuclear tests.
