The United Kingdom is introducing changes to its immigration system based on Danish experience
- The Minister of Internal Affairs plans to change the immigration system.
- The Danish experience will be used to strengthen immigration rules.
- Political debates within Labour regarding the new approach are ongoing.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Shabana Mahmood, plans to announce significant changes to the immigration system of the United Kingdom, which will be based on Danish experience, known for its sovereignty. It is expected that the new rules will be limited to family reunification and the provision of temporary refugee status.
The government intends to reduce the pull factors that attract migrants to the United Kingdom and simplify the process of deporting individuals without the right to reside in the country. Recently, a government delegation visited Copenhagen to study the Danish model.
The Danish model has reduced the number of successful applications for asylum to a 40-year low, which has been reflected in British officials' reports. In Denmark, refugees who have received status can usually remain only on a temporary basis, and are subjected to various conditions, including language proficiency tests.
Internal Labour politics have split into supporters and opponents of such an approach. Some party members believe that the Danish approach is too harsh and could hinder progressive elections. Meanwhile, others are leaning towards strengthening immigration policy to preserve votes in the "red wall," which could be lost to the benefit of Reform UK.
According to Shabana Mahmood, changes in immigration policy aim to restore control over the borders of the United Kingdom. She noted that in the context of increasing challenges related to immigration, it is essential to implement decisive measures to improve the situation.
