The UK government is planning measures against extreme drought

  • The UK is preparing for the largest drought in decades.
  • The average reservoir capacity is currently at 63.3%.
  • The government plans to build new reservoirs to ensure water supply.

The government and water supply companies in the UK are preparing extreme measures in connection with the possibility of the largest drought in recent decades. According to the Meteorological Office, a lower average amount of rainfall is predicted, which increases the risk of water shortages.

Regardless of the average rainfall in August and September, some regions are experiencing severe shortages of water supplies. The average reservoir capacity currently stands at 63.3% compared to 76% at this time last year. In some regions, such as Ardingl in Western Sussex, the level of reservoir capacity is below 30%.

South East Water has already submitted a request to restrict water use for certain businesses, such as cleaning buildings and filling swimming pools. Experts believe that the UK will need significant rainfall in winter to replenish water resources.

Professor Hannah Clock from the University of Reading stated that, given the changes in climate, it is essential to adapt to new conditions. She emphasized that building new reservoirs alone is insufficient; more effective measures for managing water resources are also necessary.

Water Resources Minister Emma Hardy confirmed that the government will monitor the situation in all regions, especially those that are still suffering from drought. The government plans to build nine new reservoirs to ensure stable water supply in the long term.

The situation remains tense, and if rainfall does not occur, the UK risks being left without water in the coming seasons.
