Assistance for Families on SNAP Amid Pet Food Shortages
- Many families on SNAP are facing difficulties in securing pet food for their domestic animals.
- An increase in demand for pet food is being observed in shelters across the country.
- Organizations are providing assistance to help prevent the surrender of pets to shelters.
In New Orleans, Sara Lungvits reported on the challenges of feeding not only her two teenage daughters but also their pet animals. Due to delays in SNAP benefit payments, assistance has been sent from the Illinois nonprofit organization that provided a food gift certificate for purchases to her.
The SNAP program does not allow the purchase of pet food, but it does help cover costs for purchasing food for domestic companions. It is noted that over 20 million pets live in poverty along with their families, and economic hardships are one of the main reasons why pets are surrendered to shelters.
According to data, many shelters are facing increased demand for pet food. In January, the number of families using pet food banks rose to 125 at the New Leash on Life shelter in Tennessee, compared to 75-100 in a typical month.
In addition, many food banks have begun stockpiling pet food, realizing that many people are ready to feed their pets before considering their own food. One volunteer noted that in some cases, pets are an emotional support for their owners.
Despite the challenges, many organizations continue to strive to assist families in order to prevent the surrender of pets to shelters.
