Situation in Sudan: Thousands flee from violence
- More than 16,200 people have fled to camps in Tavil after the capture of El-Fasher.
- The humanitarian situation in the camps is critical, with a lack of food and medical supplies.
- The conflict has been ongoing since April 2023, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people.
Thousands of Sudanese have been forced to leave their homes due to violence, which is fueled by the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF). After the capture of the city of El-Fasher, which occurred on July 26, 2023, more than 16,200 people have fled to camps in Tavil, located approximately 70 km from El-Fasher. According to estimates from international migration organizations, nearly 82,000 individuals have been displaced from the city and surrounding areas.
The humanitarian situation in the camps is critical. People live in makeshift tents, many of which are made of tarpaulin and plastic. The lack of food, medical supplies, and necessary conditions for survival makes life in the camps extraordinarily difficult. According to a representative of a humanitarian organization, families survive on only two meals or sometimes just one portion a day.
In addition, the RSF continues its aggression, and on November 4, 2023, new attacks were reported, including incursions that aimed to attack the city of El-Obeid. The Sudanese army managed to destroy one of the incursions, which indicates the RSF's preparation for new offensives.
However, despite the recent agreement of the RSF on a humanitarian truce, OCHA warns of the potential escalation of conflict, which may lead to even greater suffering among the population. The conflict, which has been ongoing since April 2023, has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of nearly 12 million individuals.
