Driver attempted to flee from police and crashed into a crowd in Tampa

Early in the morning on November 8, 2025, in Tampa, Florida, a car that fled from the police crashed into a crowd of people in the historic Ybor City area. This incident resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to eleven.

Approximately at 12:40 AM, the Tampa police department reported a vehicle that was speeding on Interstate I-275. The driver, 22-year-old Silas Sampson, had previously been cited for street racing in another area. The police attempted to stop the vehicle using a technique that allows them to pull it over, but this was unsuccessful.

The police decided to withdraw from the pursuit when the vehicle continued to speed toward Ybor City. Eventually, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a bar where many people were present.

Three victims died at the scene of the incident, while one person succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. The condition of one of the injured is critical, while the other eight received treatment in hospitals, but their condition is stable. Two individuals suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital.

According to the Tampa police chief, Lee Berkava, the incident became "a senseless tragedy." The driver, Silas Sampson, was arrested and he faces charges of four counts of murder due to the fatalities and four counts of vehicular homicide with serious consequences.
