Trump's Press Secretary Accuses BBC of Fake News
- Chairman Levitt accused the BBC of manipulating information.
- The BBC program Panorama sparked outrage over the editing of Trump's speech.
- The leak of documents indicates possible systemic problems at the BBC.
The press secretary of President Donald Trump, Chairman Levitt, characterized BBC as "100% fake news" and a "propaganda machine" after accusations of bias in some reports.
This accusation arose after deputies stated that the corporation "strongly misled" viewers in the Panorama program, which selectively edited Trump's speech before the riots in Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The program showed how Trump called his supporters "to fight like hell," but omitted the part where he called for them to "peacefully and patriotically express their thoughts."
Levitt stated that this "deliberately misleading, selectively edited video" is further confirmation that the BBC is "fake news that is not worth spending time on television screens in Great Britain."
A letter, which reportedly was written by Michael Prescott, a former member of the BBC editorial standards committee, was published in Telegraph. It states that the editing of the material was "entirely misleading." Prescott, who left his position at the beginning of this year, did not comment on the leak.
BBC responded to the outrage, stating that "it does not comment on leaked documents," but takes seriously the feedback it receives.
It is noted that as a result of the riots in Capitol, five people were killed, including a police officer, and around 174 police officers were injured. The damage caused during the attack is estimated at $2.7 million.
