Volcanic Eruption in Ethiopia Disrupts Airlines
- The eruption of the Haili Gubbi volcano occurred for the first time in 12,000 years.
- The volcanic ash cloud has disrupted air travel in India and the Middle East.
- There are no casualties reported, but many flights have been affected due to the ash cloud.
The Haili Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years on November 23, 2025, releasing a massive ash cloud that reached heights of up to 14 km.
The volcanic eruption has led to cancellations and changes in flight routes for airlines in India and the Middle East. Airports in Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, and other regions have reported potential delays.
It is expected that the ash cloud will continue to drift eastward towards China, and its impact on aviation may lessen by the evening of November 25.
Officials report that there are no casualties, but many animals in the vicinity of the volcano have been affected due to the ash cloud, which has led to problems with livestock feed. Local residents describe eruptions during the eruption, comparing them to previous significant eruptions.
The volcano is located in the geologically active region of the Rift Valley, where tectonic plates are slowly moving apart. This eruption occurred not far from the Erta Ale volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Africa.
