In Ukraine, they promote an alternative celebration of Thanksgiving Day
- Substitutes for turkey promote the use of plant-based indicators instead of their slaughter.
- Programs for plant-based alternatives help raise funds for the maintenance of indicators.
- Expanding educational programs about the living conditions of turkeys on farms.
In Colorado, USA, "Haven" — an indicator that received a grant, holds weekly Thanksgiving Day events in a substitute for turkey, Luvin Arms. This substitute has become a popular place where people can "adopt" indicators instead of killing them for the holiday. With the support of such programs, the number of adopted indicators is increasing, and more and more people are choosing humane alternatives to traditional celebrations.
Since 2022, Luvin Arms has promoted the possibility of adopting indicators for a donation of $25. For this money, donors receive a certificate, a photo, and the opportunity for a virtual or personal meeting with the indicator. This year, the organization hopes to raise $18,000 to ensure the continued maintenance of the indicators.
Programs for adopting indicators also have an educational goal. They help people learn more about the conditions in which indicators live on farms and about the fact that these animals are more than just traditional food on the holiday table.
Farm Sanctuary, which has been operating since 1986, was one of the first organizations to establish a program for adopting indicators. For decades, its activities have led to the rescue of thousands of indicators and the collection of significant funds for their maintenance. Other substitutes, such as Barn Sanctuary, have also joined this initiative, expanding opportunities for adoption.
