Two climbers died in New Zealand's highest peak
- Two climbers died while attempting to ascend Mount Aoraki.
- Another two members of the group were rescued by helicopter.
- Over 240 deaths have been recorded on the mountain since the last century.
Two climbers died on Aoraki, also known as Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand. The incident occurred in a group of four climbers who were trying to reach the summit at an elevation of 3724 meters. Two of them were rescued by helicopter on November 25, sustaining no injuries.
According to police information, the deceased climbers were connected by a climbing rope when they fell from the summit. Their bodies were found in challenging alpine conditions, and specialized teams are working on their retrieval.
Aoraki is a popular destination for experienced climbers, but its technical challenges, such as crevasses, sudden weather changes, and steep ascents, make climbing it dangerous. Since the beginning of the 20th century, there have been over 240 deaths on this mountain, many of which remain unidentified.
Among those who died last year were three climbers from the USA and Canada, whose searches were halted after five days when their belongings indicated their demise.
