Every day, 137 women are killed due to domestic violence

  • In 2024, 83,000 women and girls were killed.
  • 60% of the murders were committed by close relatives.
  • Africa has the highest rate of femicides in the world.

According to a new report by the Organization of American States, in 2024, every 10 minutes, a woman or girl was killed worldwide. This amounts to approximately 137 cases per day, mostly by partners or family members.

The report, published on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, indicates that 83,000 women and girls were intentionally killed last year, of which 60% were killed by close relatives.

Research also highlights that only 11% of individuals became victims of murder at the hands of family members. This indicates that domestic violence remains a serious threat to women.

Africa had the highest rate of femicides, with 3 cases per 100,000 women, while in Europe this figure was 0.5.

Experts indicate the need for strengthened legal mechanisms, improved support services, and restrictions on firearms to combat such violence.

The report also notes that digital violence can transition into the real world, increasing risks for women.
