The Council Plans to Rename Prince Andrew Street in Northern Ireland
- The Council of Northern Ireland has decided to change the name of Prince Andrew Street in Carrickfergus.
- The renaming of the street is related to the removal of the prince's titles by King Charles.
- The proposal to name the street in honor of Queen Elizabeth II is supported unanimously.
The Council of the Northern Ireland accepted the decision to rename the street named after Prince Andrew, in the town of Carrickfergus. This decision was made on Monday, November 25, 2025, after the king stripped Andrew of his titles due to scandals related to his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The street received its name in 1986 in honor of the wedding of the prince to Sarah Ferguson, but now a single council member has supported the proposal to rename it. Councillor Lorne Gray from the Alliance Party opposed naming the street in honor of the disgraced prince.
The Council plans to hold consultations with local residents regarding the new naming, as changing the name of the street may have significant consequences for residents' addresses, such as changing documents, bank accounts, and utility payments.
This decision has prompted numerous appeals to the council for the necessity of changing the name of the street. Other places, such as Maidenhead, are also considering the possibility of renaming streets named after Prince Andrew.
