Australia introduces a minimum wage for delivery couriers

  • Delivery couriers will receive a minimum of 31.30 AUD per hour.
  • The agreement covers the entire delivery industry already in Australia.
  • New conditions have been introduced to improve working conditions for couriers.

In Australia, delivery companies, including DoorDash and Uber Eats, have signed an agreement with the Transport Workers Union for the establishment of new minimum standards for couriers. This agreement includes the introduction of a minimum hourly wage and mandatory insurance for unexpected work-related incidents.

As part of the project, couriers will receive no less than 31.30 Australian dollars (approximately 20.19 USD) per hour. This is 25% more than many couriers currently earn, as their pay is based on each order.

If the agreement is approved by the Fair Work Commission, it will become the first such document in the world covering not only Uber Eats and DoorDash couriers but the entire delivery industry, including other platforms. Furthermore, it may pave the way for the establishment of similar standards in other sectors of the economy related to orders.

This initiative was announced against the backdrop of another competitor, Menulog, which is transitioning to Uber Eats. The agreement also includes new procedures for dispute resolution, access to work records, and improvements in the interaction processes with couriers.

The Minister for Employment, Amanda Rishworth, noted that couriers have worked under conditions that do not meet minimum standards, including tips for survival. She emphasized that this is not a sustainable approach in Australia.

Couriers believe that the increase in wages will reduce the risk of precarious situations on the road and allow them to work in safer conditions.

If the agreement is approved, it will take effect in July of the upcoming year.
