Expansion of the sugar tax includes milkshakes and lattes

  • The sugar tax is being expanded to include milkshakes and lattes.
  • The rate for sugar content has been reduced to 4.5 grams of sugar per 100 ml.
  • The tax does not apply to drinks prepared in cafes.

In Great Britain, the sugar tax, also known as the tax on the soft drink industry, will be expanded to include packaging for milkshakes and lattes. The Minister of Health, Ues Striting, announced this in the community hall.

In particular, there will be an exception for milkshakes, while the rate for sugar content has been reduced from 5 grams to 4.5 grams of sugar per 100 ml. This decision was the result of consultations held by the government, during which the issue of reducing the sugar threshold was discussed.

However, the tax does not apply to drinks prepared and served in cafes and restaurants. A new "lactose allowance" will also be introduced, which will take into account natural sugars in dairy products.

The tax was introduced in 2018, and since then there has been an average reduction in sugar content in soft drinks of 46%. The Ministry of Finance reports that sugar consumption among children in Great Britain exceeds the recommended norm.
