The Netflix series "Stranger Things" is gearing up for its conclusion with a large-scale marketing campaign reminiscent of major film releases.
Before the release of the fifth and final season, thousands of people gathered in Los Angeles for a bike ride called "The Last Ride," featuring participants riding bicycles in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.
Retailers will promote products that include everything from Demogorgon Crunch snacks to Hellfire Club backpacks, which is the largest consumer goods program Netflix has ever launched, according to the company’s marketing director, Marian Lee.
Target stores are selling over 150 "Stranger Things" products.
Many brands are turning to 1980s nostalgia. Gatorade has brought back its Citrus Cooler flavor, while Walmart is selling a "Stranger Things" collection with Care Bears, which were popular during that era.
Promotions are happening all over the world. "This is a show that resonates globally," Lee noted.
In Paris, visitors can experience a holiday market in Hawkins at the Galeries Lafayette department store. The "Stranger Things" experience, which includes the Hawkins laboratory, is stopping in San Francisco, New York City, Rio de Janeiro, and Sydney. New "Netflix Houses" in shopping centers will feature "Stranger Things" zones.
Instead of releasing all episodes at once, Netflix has decided to stagger the release of the final season over the major holidays. Four episodes will be released in mid-December in the U.S., three on Christmas, and the final episode on New Year’s Day.
The series "Stranger Things," which features Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and Noah Schnapp, will be hard to miss during the holiday season. In the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, there will be a float dedicated to "Stranger Things" featuring the rock band Foreigner from the 1970s and 1980s. More products are set to be revealed to entice shoppers during the holiday season.
This approach mirrors what major studios do for big-budget films, such as "Barbie" or "Wicked," according to Amanda Challet, an expert from licensing and former president of Informa Markets Global Licensing Group. Television rarely receives such treatment.
Fans at the bike ride in Los Angeles expressed anticipation for the final season of the series, which began nine years ago.
Netflix hopes to sustain interest in the "Stranger Things" universe for many years to come. On Broadway and in London's West End, the "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" exhibit is being shown, and an animated series is planned for next year.
A spin-off is also planned in real-time. "This is not a continuation of the Hawkins story, these characters, but it’s still in the universe of 'Stranger Things,'" said co-creator Ross Duffer.
Executive producer Shawn Levy revealed few details, but emphasized that he and the Duffers are committed to giving fans something new. "We won’t be repeating ourselves," Levy said.
