American engineering company became a victim of Russian hackers
- Russian hackers attacked an American company through connections with Ukraine.
- The attack was identified as part of a serious breach.
- The attackers are targeting organizations that support Ukraine.
Washington — In early this year, hackers working for the Russian intelligence agency attacked an American engineering company. This attack was carried out through connections with a municipality in the U.S. that has a sister city in Ukraine.
Research conducted by Arctic Wolf showed that Russian hackers, known as RomCom, are targeting organizations that either support Ukraine or collaborate with Ukrainian civil society and government.
According to Ismael Valensuela, vice president of Arctic Wolf, these hackers regularly attack organizations that provide services to Ukrainian municipalities or cooperate with Ukrainian civil society and government.
The attack identified by Arctic Wolf occurred before any serious breach could happen to the company. At the same time, several weeks prior, the FBI warned about attempts by Russian hackers to breach U.S. networks for the purpose of compromising critical infrastructure.
It is noted that in Ukraine, numerous cyberattacks are being conducted against humanitarian organizations that provide assistance, including the International Red Cross and UNICEF. In such cases, the attackers use fake electronic letters to force users to activate malicious programs.
