The South African police have started an investigation regarding Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, due to allegations that she recruited 17 people for the war in Ukraine under false pretenses. The police confirmed that the investigation was initiated following a statement from Zuma-Sambudla's sister, Nkozazana Zuma-Mnkube.

In response to the statement, Zuma-Sambudla together with two unidentified individuals allegedly recruited people for training with mercenaries in Russia, but in reality, they ended up in conflict without their consent. The document states that the individuals were transferred to a Russian mercenary group, and all 17 individuals are relatives of the accused.

The Minister of State Security of South Africa, Ronald Lamola, reported that diplomatic efforts are ongoing to return the individuals who were sent three distress messages from Donbas, where they were located. Lamola emphasized that "the police are obliged to conduct an investigation, and anyone involved in this must be arrested."

Individuals aged between 20 and 39 years old were recruited into mercenary forces under the pretext of lucrative labor contracts. The South African government received information that they became victims of trafficking, and is now investigating how they ended up in the combat zone.

According to the legislation of South Africa, it is prohibited to send military assistance to foreign governments or to participate in armed conflicts in other countries without government authorization.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla is a member of parliament from the party "uMkhonto weSizwe," founded by her father. She is also currently under investigation for allegations of involvement in the incitement of racism during the unrest in South Africa in 2021.
