Botulism Contamination Found in All ByHeart Baby Formula Products

  • Contamination with botulism has been found in all ByHeart baby formula products.
  • Parents are advised to stop feeding their children with this formula immediately.
  • Since the beginning of August, 107 cases of infant botulism have been confirmed in the USA.

All ByHeart baby formula products may be contaminated with botulism, as became known after laboratory tests. Testing of 36 samples from three different batches revealed that five samples contained the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which can cause life-threatening illness. According to federal and state health authorities, at least 31 infants in 15 states have been hospitalized for botulism after consuming this formula.

Botulism, known as infant botulism, occurs when infants ingest spores of the bacteria, which in their intestines begin to produce toxins. Symptoms may include constipation, difficulty feeding, and weakness. The investigation is ongoing, as some infants were hospitalized as recently as last month.

On November 11, ByHeart announced a recall of all its products, but some of them still remain on store shelves, despite previous warnings. Parents are advised to stop feeding their children with this formula and monitor for symptoms that may appear up to 30 days later.

Health officials emphasize that botulism is a serious medical condition and requires immediate treatment. Since September 2025, there have been 107 cases of infant botulism in the USA that required treatment with the antitoxin BabyBIG. This preparation is the only available treatment for this condition.
