- CPSC warns about Rad Power Bikes batteries due to fire hazards.
- Consumers are urged to stop using the hazardous batteries.
- The company is not conducting a recall due to financial issues.
This is reported by CNET, Jalopnik.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns about the safety of certain lithium-ion batteries used in Rad Power Bikes electric bicycles. Batteries with model numbers RP-1304 and HL-RP-S1304 may spontaneously catch fire or explode, especially if they have been exposed to water or moisture.
This CPSC statement is part of efforts to protect health and safety, as Rad Power Bikes has refused to conduct a full recall or replacement of batteries, citing financial difficulties. There have been 31 reported incidents, of which 12 resulted in significant material damage, estimated at approximately $734,500.
The batteries were sold both as originals and as replacements for several models of Rad Power Bikes electric bicycles, available through RadPowerBikes.com, Best Buy, and independent retailers. The company urges consumers to check their batteries before use and to immediately stop using them if they notice any signs of damage, corrosion, or contact with water.
CPSC also notes that the warning does not apply to all Rad batteries, except for those that have the Safe Shield safety certification.
