Sanctions by the USA against the leaders of Haiti due to support for gangs
- The USA has imposed sanctions on Frantz Alphonse Jean for supporting gangs.
- Haiti has not held elections for almost a decade.
- The political crisis in the country is deepening due to the gangs' violence.
The US government has imposed visa restrictions on Frantz Alphonse Jean, a member of Haiti's interim presidential council, accusing him of supporting gangs and other criminal organizations. This move could exacerbate political instability in the country, where 90% of the territory is controlled by criminal groups.
Jean denies the accusations, asserting that they are unjust. He noted that pressure from the USA and Canada intensified when the council began discussing candidates for the upcoming national elections, scheduled for September and October 2026.
According to information, the USA has restricted travel for this official, and also annulled all valid visas. The Haitian government is under pressure to hold elections by February 7, but the gang violence from the side of the gangs complicates the holding of these elections.
Haiti has not held elections for almost a decade, and since then the country has been experiencing a political and social crisis, intensified by the absence of a president after the assassination of Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
