Jesse Jackson, a renowned civil rights leader, was discharged from a hospital in Chicago, where he was treated for a rare neurological disorder. This was reported by his son, Joseph Jackson. The 84-year-old activist left Northwestern Memorial Hospital on Monday.
In 2013, Jackson was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which in the spring of 2024 was changed to progressive supranuclear palsy, a neurological disorder that shares similar symptoms with Parkinson's disease.
Joseph Jackson expressed gratitude "to the countless friends and supporters who reached out to us, visited, and prayed for our father," as well as to the medical and nursing staff at the hospital.
Jackson, who is a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr., was hospitalized on November 14. Among the visitors were former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
After announcing his diagnosis in 2017, Jackson continued to work and appear in public, including at the Democratic National Convention in 2024 in Chicago. In 2023, he remained the leader of Rainbow/PUSH, an organization he founded in 1971, but continued to lead the office for several months thereafter.
Currently, Jackson uses a wheelchair, has difficulty speaking, and cannot talk. His family, including his sons, is focusing on his care.
