Ex-President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro Begins Serving 27-Year Sentence

The Brazilian Supreme Court indicated to former president Jair Bolsonaro to start serving his term in the penitentiary. Judge Alexandre de Moraes noted the ruling about the 70-year-old politician starting to serve his 27-year sentence at the Federal Police headquarters in Brazil, where he will remain under guard starting Saturday.
Bolsonaro was convicted in connection with the organization of a scheme aimed at preventing the transfer of power to leftist opponent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He and six allies were recognized as guilty in the case "to destroy" Brazilian democracy.
In the ruling, after the completion of the appeals period, the court ordered Bolsonaro to begin serving his sentence. Earlier, he had been under house arrest, but was taken into custody after an unsuccessful attempt to seize an electronic bracelet. His allies also received sentences in connection with the case.
Two high-ranking army officials, former Minister of Defense and Minister of Institutional Security, received sentences of 19 and 21 years respectively. Other participants in the scheme received sentences ranging from 16 to 26 years.
After the conviction, Bolsonaro's son stated to journalists that his father is "psychologically broken".
