Washington, D.C. — Mayor of Washington Muriel Bowser announced in a statement that she will not be running for reelection this term. Bowser, who has held this position for three terms, noted that this was one of the most significant decisions in her life.
She believes that she has achieved all the goals set and considers it essential to pass the baton to new leaders. "It has been a privilege to be your mayor. Together we have created a legacy of success, which I am very proud of," Bowser said.
In recent months, her work has been focused on complex relations with President Donald Trump, who sent federal forces to the city to combat crime. Bowser sought to engage in negotiations about the return of the Washington Commanders stadium to the district, as well as to respond to threats regarding the financing of the city from the Republicans.
She also emphasized that restoring the economy of the city after the pandemic, which dealt a blow to businesses and left many enterprises in the city center without clients, is critical.
This story is still developing. Stay tuned for updates.
