The Boston Red Sox signed right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals in a deal reported by Jerry, known from the agreement. The transaction has not yet been officially announced.
As part of the agreement, the Cardinals receive right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts and a promising pitcher. Gray, 36, had a record of 14-8 with an ERA of 4.28 in the previous season with the Cardinals. Over his 13-year career, he has 125 wins and 102 losses with an ERA of 3.58 and three appearances in the All-Star Games.
Fitts, who has been a consistent performer for 26 years, had a record of 2-4 with an ERA of 5.00 in the previous season in Boston. The Cardinals also acquired left-handed pitcher Brendon Clark, who was selected in the draft in the fifth round in 2024.
This agreement is part of the team's reconstruction under new president of baseball operations Haim Bloom. It is projected that next season St. Louis will have a lower budget than the Cincinnati Reds. It is expected that this agreement could indicate a possible exchange of pitcher or cash payments. Gray has agreed to changes in his contract, reducing his payment in 2026 from $35 million to $31 million, while the buyout decreased from $5 million to $10 million.
