Shutdown of the Olympic pipeline causes a supply shortage of fuel in the USA

  • The pipeline supplies over 90% of fuel for Oregon.
  • Governors of states announced a state of emergency for fuel delivery.
  • BP has resumed fuel deliveries to Seattle-Tacoma airport.

The shutdown of the Olympic pipeline in the Pacific Northwest of the USA has triggered a declared emergency regarding fuel supply. On November 17, 2025, BP halted pipeline operations due to a leak discovered on the Everett farm. Since then, from November 11, the pipeline has been closed for repairs.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek stated that fuel prices could rise significantly due to the necessity of utilizing tankers and barges for fuel delivery. However, she indicated that no fuel shortage is expected in the state.

BP reported that work is being done to address the leak, and the company is able to resume fuel deliveries to the Seattle-Tacoma international airport. Along with expert analysis, the pipeline closure does not significantly impact gasoline prices in Washington and Oregon.

According to Washington Senator Maria Cantwell, the pipeline has a history of leaks, including a tragedy in 1999 that resulted in the deaths of three people. In recent years, other incidents have occurred, including a gasoline leak in 2023 that led to contamination of water bodies.

The Washington State Department of Ecology imposed a fine on BP in the amount of $3.8 million for the leak related to the corrosion of pipeline elements.
