The court has determined the sentence for the man who murdered a woman in San Francisco

  • Keonté Gatron received a sentence of life imprisonment for the murder of a woman.
  • 87-year-old Huan died after an attack in 2020.
  • The court postponed the hearing due to the absence of evidence regarding the sentence.

SAN FRANCISCO — A man who was found guilty of murdering 88-year-old Huan, who died after an attack, appeared before the court in a case regarding life imprisonment. Judge Eric Fleming stated that Keonté Gatron, 25 years old, will likely receive a sentence without the possibility of parole. The verdict has been postponed until the next week due to the defendant not receiving evidence regarding the sentence.

Gatron was found guilty in January 2019 for murder, car theft, robbery, and other crimes during a two-day crime spree. According to human rights data, he targeted victims of Asian descent or those who spoke English poorly.

Huan, who lived in the Visitation Valley area, was attacked during a morning stroll. She was found lying on a children's playground, with her skull, hands, and shins broken. Her death occurred within a few hours after the attack.

Huan underwent prolonged treatment in the hospital but died in January 2020. Her attack happened against a backdrop of rising crime against Asians during the pandemic, which sparked a recorded increase in anti-Asian-American hate.

Gatron, who represented himself in court, denied his guilt but did not provide any evidence. He also accused the police of manipulating video surveillance, DNA, and other evidence.

Judge Fleming stated that he intends to sentence Gatron to two consecutive terms — one with the possibility of conditional release and the other for 30 years for other crimes. Gatron plans to appeal the verdict.

Three daughters of Huan and several relatives testified in court, expressing their memories of her as a hardworking woman, mother, and employee of a sewing factory in China, who dreamed of life in the USA. Last year, the park where the tragedy occurred was renamed to "Peace and Friendship Park named after Huan."
