This was reported by BBC, The Guardian.
Eberechi Eze, a Crystal Palace footballer, made headlines by winning an online chess tournament just after helping his team reach the FA Cup final.
The 26-year-old England international won the four-day amateur PogChamps tournament on Chess.com, which featured 12 athletes and content creators. In the final, Eze defeated American YouTube blogger Sapnap with a score of 2-0, earning a prize of $20,000 (£15,000).
The victory was streamed live on Twitch. Chess.com noted that Eze "defends as well as he attacks," capitalizing on an opponent's mistake that led to a piece loss.
Eze began playing chess thanks to his former teammate Michael Olise. He shared that he learned the game by watching YouTube videos about chess openings and often played with his brother during training sessions.
On May 23, Crystal Palace will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final, aiming to secure the club's first major trophy. The Football Association announced that the match will kick off at 16:30 BST.
