Artificial Intelligence in U.S. Intelligence

Washington (AP) — Artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating the work of U.S. intelligence agencies, said National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard at a technology conference on Tuesday.

Gabbard noted that AI programs, when used responsibly, can save money and free up intelligence officers to gather and analyze information. She expressed her frustration over the slow pace of intelligence work during her time in Congress, which remains a challenge.

AI can handle human resources management programs or scan sensitive documents before their potential declassification. Her office has released tens of thousands of pages of materials related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and his brother, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, at the direction of President Donald Trump.

Experts had predicted that this process could take many months or even years, but AI expedited the work by scanning documents for materials that should remain classified, Gabbard said during her speeches at the Amazon Web Services Summit in Washington.

"We were able to do this using AI tools significantly faster than it was done before — namely, when people were checking each page," Gabbard said.

The intelligence community is already relying on many private sector technologies, and Gabbard expressed a desire to expand these relationships instead of using federal resources to create expensive alternatives.

"How can we look at the available tools that exist — primarily in the private sector — so that our intelligence officers, both collectors and analysts, can focus on things that only they can do?" she added.

Gabbard, who coordinates the work of 18 intelligence agencies, promised to reform U.S. intelligence services. She created a new task force to review changes in agency operations and for greater declassification. She also dismissed two intelligence veterans due to their alleged opposition to Trump, canceled diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and relocated staff who prepare the President's Daily Briefing to gain more control.
