Toyota Unveils New Concepts for Le Mans with Hybrid and Hydrogen Technologies
- Toyota has unveiled new vehicles for Le Mans, including the hybrid GR010 and the hydrogen-powered GR LH2.
- The GR010 is the successor to previous models with reduced production and operational costs.
- Competition with other manufacturers, such as Peugeot, is increasing in the new racing category.
This was reported by Ars Technica, Jalopnik.
Introduction to New Toyota Technologies
Toyota Gazoo Racing continues to develop its technologies in competition, presenting new vehicles for participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2021, the company debuted the GR010, a hybrid prototype that will compete in the new Le Mans Hypercar category.
Hybrid GR010
The GR010 is the successor to the TS050, which won previous Le Mans races. The new vehicle features larger dimensions and weight, as well as a less powerful engine, making it cheaper to produce and operate. However, with these changes, lap times on the track will be approximately 10 seconds slower.
The first run of the GR010 is scheduled for March at Sebring, Florida.
Hydrogen GR LH2
In early June 2025, Toyota introduced the GR LH2 concept, aimed at implementing hydrogen technologies in racing. This vehicle is based on the GR010 and serves as a test prototype demonstrating the potential of hydrogen engines in sports. However, the official launch of hydrogen vehicles at Le Mans has been delayed until 2027 due to prior setbacks.
This concept also commemorates the 40th anniversary of Toyota's first appearance at Le Mans in 1985, featuring special liveries for the cars participating in this year's race.
The Future of Le Mans
Toyota plans to continue the development of both hybrid and hydrogen technologies in competition. However, competition from other manufacturers, such as Peugeot, is also increasing as they prepare to debut their vehicles in the new category.
