Recent Events in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, federal agents have detained hundreds of immigrants, including families with small children. According to lawyers, the detained individuals were held in concerning conditions, lacking sufficient food and water. One case involves a family with three children who were held in the basement of an administrative building for 48 hours after their arrest.
After their detention, they were provided only a bag of chips, a box of cookies, and a small carton of milk per day. On the first day of detention, they received no water, and on the second day, the entire family was given just one bottle to share.
Lawyers from the Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) noted that the detainees were not placed in separate facilities for women and children. In some cases, tents were set up for women and children outside, but without beds or showers.
Transfer of Detainees
After their detention, the families were transferred to a family detention center in Dilley, Texas. Lawyers attempting to contact the detainees reported difficulties in obtaining information about their detention conditions.
Overall, during the raids that began in Los Angeles, 118 immigrants were detained. Many were arrested in courthouses and administrative offices, and lawyers tried to gain access to the detainees but were often blocked.
Detention Conditions
Conditions in the detention centers also raised concerns. For instance, at the center in Adelanto, detainees were served food late, and some had to sleep on the floor due to a lack of beds. Several detainees reported deteriorating health due to the absence of medical care.
Checkpoints and Government Response
California Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized that during protests in Los Angeles, checkpoints were observed where ICE agents checked people's documents. Such actions caused panic among residents who feared going outside.
These checkpoints have become part of a broader strategy that includes the detention of immigrants despite changes in immigration policy. Many detained immigrants were deported without proper legal process.
Rights of Detainees
Those who come under questioning by ICE agents are advised to know their rights. They have the right to ask if they can leave the location, and if the answer is negative, they can refuse to answer questions and request a lawyer.
Despite these rights, many immigrants reported violations of their rights during detentions, leading to swift deportations without the opportunity to defend their interests.
