Defense Concludes in Karen Read Case
On June 11, 2025, the defense for Karen Read concluded its case in the second trial concerning the death of her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe. Read is charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and leaving the scene of an accident.
In its case, the defense argued that Read became a victim of a conspiracy that involved planting evidence and using her as a convenient scapegoat. Read's attorneys noted that the prosecution distorted her words, particularly in a television interview where she expressed concerns about the situation.
Experts who testified for the defense asserted that the damage to Read's car did not correspond to the speed at which she was alleged to have collided with O'Keefe. One accident reconstruction expert stated that the injuries on O'Keefe's arm could not have been caused by her vehicle.
Read claims that she left O'Keefe near the house where a party was taking place and that he may have been assaulted by other attendees. The defense also attempted to demonstrate police bias against Read from the outset, as the lead investigator in the case was dismissed due to hostile comments about Read.
The next phase of the case will involve closing statements from both sides, after which the case will be submitted to the court for a verdict.
