A Soldier Exchange is Underway in Ukraine

Exchange of Wounded Soldiers
June 12, 2025 Russia and Ukraine are planning an exchange of severely wounded soldiers. This agreement is part of a larger exchange, in which each side hopes to release over 1,000 prisoners of war. Vladimir Medinsky, Russia's chief negotiator, confirmed that "tomorrow we will begin urgent 'sanitary exchanges' of wounded soldiers."
Return of Fallen Bodies
On Wednesday, Ukrainian authorities reported the return of 1,212 bodies of fallen defenders. Russia, in turn, received 27 bodies of Russian soldiers. Official data regarding the number of bodies returned by Ukraine has not been disclosed.
Military Actions
The Ukrainian army confirmed that they struck a large Russian gunpowder factory in the western Tambov region, resulting in a fire at the site. Explosions were also recorded at an ammunition depot in Russia's Kursk region.
Regional Security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Russia seeks to destabilize southern Ukraine, as well as neighboring Moldova and Romania. He spoke at a conference of Southeast European leaders in Odesa, calling for increased pressure on Moscow.
International Relations
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also attended the summit in Odesa, where he refused to sign a joint declaration to strengthen sanctions against Russia. This marks his first visit to Ukraine in 12 years of being in office.
Court Decisions
A court in the United Kingdom ruled in favor of leasing companies that filed a lawsuit against insurers regarding planes left in Russia after the war began. The lawsuit amount totaled 4.7 billion USD.
Infrastructure Issues
Restoration work on the Sofia Cathedral in Kyiv has begun after it was damaged due to Russian shelling. Part of the cathedral's façade collapsed, raising concerns among Ukrainians.
