Arrests of Protesters in Los Angeles
On June 12, 2025, in Los Angeles, during protests against immigration raids, law enforcement arrested over 220 individuals. Of these, 203 were arrested for disobedience, and 17 for violating the curfew imposed after acts of vandalism in the city center.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew from 8 PM to 6 AM to prevent violence during the protests. These demonstrations, which began peacefully, saw instances of violence, including the use of fireworks against police officers.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated that some protesters who took to the streets after dark acted aggressively and were armed. He noted that commercial fireworks were used during the protests, and there were also instances of vandalism.
The arrested protesters included men and women accused of violence, vandalism, and using dangerous objects against police officers. It is known that one of the arrested individuals used paint to write graffiti on a government building.
In response to the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump sent over 4,000 National Guardsmen and about 700 active Marines to Los Angeles, which prompted protests from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who considers such actions illegal and unnecessary.
Meanwhile, a meme war has erupted on social media between the Trump administration and Newsom, accompanying serious legal disputes over the use of military forces in domestic affairs.
