Court Sentences Funeral Home Owner
In Denver, Colorado, the owner of a funeral home, Miles Hartford, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for storing a woman's body in a hearse for over a year. According to the Denver District Attorney's Office, Hartford pleaded guilty to abuse of a corpse and theft.
At the time of his arrest last December, the body of 63-year-old Christina Rosales was found in the trunk of his hearse, covered with blankets. It is known that Hartford provided Rosales's family with the cremated remains of another person, passing them off as the remains of the deceased.
During the search, police also uncovered cremated remains of over 30 individuals hidden in boxes throughout Hartford's residence. Prosecutors noted that Hartford treated the bodies and remains in a manner that would outrage any family.
Maximum Penalty for Crimes
The 18-month prison term is the maximum penalty under Colorado state law for the charges brought against Hartford. "Nothing can undo the pain that Miles Hartford has caused many families, but we hope this sentence brings some measure of justice," said Denver District Attorney John Walsh.
This case is another in a series of horrific incidents involving funeral homes in Colorado, where owners have been accused of storing bodies in appalling conditions and providing families with fake cremated remains.
